What can you do if you are stuck with a blocked drain? Well the easiest way to unclog your bathroom drainage is to use a drainage plunger. Using a drainage plunger is relatively simple to do. But don’t just shove the plunger into the drain pipe and start pumping it violently, you could make matters much worse. For the best results you should place the head of the plunger over the drainpipe, smoothly push down and bring up again quickly creating and even suction in the waste pipes pipe. The suction created with the upward movement will pull back the clog that is stuck in the drainpipe of your tub, sink or toilet. You may notice small overflow openings in your bath or sink and you should always remember to block these up with a wet paper towel or sponge to create maximum suction.
Chemical unblocking agents can also be used to dislodge or dissolve clogged up matter. This is usually done after you attempt to unplug your drain using your plunger. The chemicals must sit for a while as it eats away at the blockage, then you must run hot water down the drainpipe to flush it out. Just to be careful, you must put on clothes that you wouldn’t care about if they get spoiled by dirt or harmful chemicals. And since plunging can throw water in any direction you might want to consider eye-wear in order to protect you from any chemicals. Make sure to follow the supplier’s guide so that you won’t come across any issues.
You can use a pipe wrench or pliers to unscrew the P-trap if you are unable to remove the clog with the plunger, this will give you access to the pipe. Now this is going to get messy so be prepared with a towel and bucket to clean up the mess. Chrome plated fittings can be protected from scratches by taping up the teeth of the pliers or wrench; that should also give you a firmer grip on the nuts of the trap. Once you have removed the P-trap you can inspect the trap thoroughly for any blockage. If you don’t see anything, the problem might unfortunately go far deeper and may be located between the trap and the drainage soil stack.
To unclog the toilet, you should use a toilet auger to get at these deep seated stoppages. If you are attempting to clean the drain pipe of your tub or sink, you should use a drain snake. drain snakes are designed to reach deep down into the far reaches of your narrow pipes. With the help of the adjustable handle, you can literally drill into the blockage and pull out the blockage from the drainpipe. After you have successfully removed the the blockage you should put the P-trap back into place and check if water can flow through freely. Make sure that all the connections are properly fitted and sealed, and also check the P-trap for leakages.
If none of the steps you have taken work, it is time to bring in a professional plumber. Professional plumbers can identify and solve serious problems like aged pipes caving in, tree root invasion, blocked sewer line or soil stack; these should not be attempted by the homeowner as you will not have the right tools to solve the problem.
