Suffering from blocked drains
Suffering from blocked drains
Household emergencies can create a havoc and blocked drains are probably one of the worst. The worst thing is that they come without any notice. Foul smells, house getting filled with drainage water and power cuts are some of the frightening problems associated with drainage blocks. Blocked drains can also effect your business prospects by cutting down on the sales and productivity and reducing the number of customers.
The drains get blocked mostly due to foreign objects or some structural problems, so you can always take certain measures to ensure their proper functioning.
Keep a habit of removing any trapped hairs from the drain plug immediately.
Keep small objects such as combs, medicine bottles and toilet rolls away from places where they could accidentally fall into the toilet.
Using a disinfectant and hot water to clear the soap residues and regularly flushing the wash basin and shower pipework will prevent accumulation over time.
Do not dispose of bulky waste like sanitary napkins, baby nappies or shopping wraps in the toilet as they are prone to clog the pipework.
It is better to compost food wastes and cuttings as fertilizer rather than flushing them down the sink.
In case some item falls accidentally into the sink poking at it instead of pulling will make its removal more difficult and in the process further complicate the drainage problem.
Never flush down cooking fats into the drain because they solidify on coming in contact with cold water and thus it becomes very difficult to remove them. In case you have no other choice make sure to dilute fats using emulsifiers ,hot water and detergents, before disposing down the drain. Keep the water running for a minute after you have done this to keep a clear water flow.
Some regular maintenance from you side can reduce the occurrence of blocked drains.
Inspect the rain downpipes and house roof gutters for any blocks at least twice annually.
Take care when working at height but remove any accumulated debris and leaves with a trowel.
Keep a regular check on the drains so that they allow free-flow of materials by a periodic check of the inspection covers, also ensure that these have easy accessibility.
Make sure that garden matter, such as leaves or moss, are kept out of the outside drainage grids.
External drains can also be washed by using disinfectant and hot water in a manner similar to the internal drains.
In case of a business, it is better to employ a CCTV drain inspection service for drain surveys and ensure that they conduct a regular check on your drainage system. By employing CCTV inspections it gives you enough time to implement precautionary measures against any potential blockages, and by this way you can keep a constant check on the structural condition of the drainage pipe also.
